About People & Work

My name is Aideen Whelehan and I am the founder of People & Work Ltd.

I am a caring, intuitive, and natural mediator, trainer, coach and HR Specialist. My easy and open approach to people allows me to really get to the issue at hand. My style is non-confrontational, and my values of equality and fairness underpin any and all my work.

Heavily impacted by my work in five-star hospitality from early on in my career, I deliver on my promises with professionalism, good humour and empathy. My coaching training taught me to approach any situation with curiosity and an open mind encouraging a collaborative way every time.

As a mother of three small boys, I have worked hard to manage and thrive both as a mother and a consultant. I use a caring and flexible mindset to never stop learning and changing and growing in all my roles and this allows me to truly engage with everyone who works with me.

I always spend time and focus during the analysis stage of learning and development, and work closely with my clients to create learning interventions that are relevant, enriching and deliver on the goals. My methods of working are underpinned by my service background, powerful questioning techniques and key listening skills. Combined, this results in an output that is collaborative and meaningful.

I am a trained investigator and have experience at Tribunal preparation and hearings. My knowledge and calm approach to complex investigations results in a fair and consistent outcome. In my HR leadership roles, I have led on culture change projects resulting in placement on the Times Top 100 Best companies to work for and have also won industry awards for my work in People development and engagement.

As a chartered fellow of the CIPD, I have a thorough understanding of how people can be the life blood of any organisation, how best to support, inspire and help them be their best and how to help them ensure their organisation benefits from their strengths.

Mediation

I trained in Mediation in April 2019 having introduced Early Dispute Resolution practice during my hotel career. Allowing people in conflict to resolve it themselves has positive effects on mental health and ongoing relationships. Since achieving my mediation qualification I have facilitated numerous mediations resulting in agreement. The process normally takes one and a half days and includes plenty of support for the parties and their colleagues. I also ensure follow-up and after care to help parties maintain their agreements.

Learning & Development

The benefit of a clear L&D strategy can play a major part in your organisation's success. Colleagues who feel valued and supported through growth will work hard and give their best selves. I can work with you through Learning Needs conversations to creatively developing programmes that excite your teams and deliver on organisation goals.

Coaching

In 2015, I trained as a performance coach. Since then I have been using the GROW coaching model created by Sir John Whitmore and am always delighted by the results. Whether its purpose is to help with a career move, returning to work after parental leave, support with a life change or just to give you some time and space to reflect , I can offer a flexible approach that will work for you. Coaching is a hugely personal relationship and a coach and coachee match is essential, I therefore offer a free no obligation introduction session. At this time I introduce the coaching model I use and a little about how we would work together.

Investigations/Disciplnary and Grievance Hearings

Whilst Early Dispute Resolution and proactive HR practices are usually desirable, there are times when a formal approach is necessary. I have extensive knowledge and experience in carrying out complex investigations from many different industries. I believe that the experience of undertaking the formal approach can still have a positive outcome or at least maintain relationships at work. My approach is courteous and professional and efficient ensuring the right outcome is reached. Sometimes the right result is a disciplinary meeting but there are occasions when retraining, mediation or coaching would work to resolve the issue. I have the right experience and approach to determine this together with you.

Policy creation

Creating or updating organisation policies can be time consuming and lonely. I have recently facilitated workshops on approaching developing new policies as a team. With this consultative approach it gives the group from the organisation the chance to participate in creating new policy/ weighing in with opinions and ideas. The process begins by giving a team suggested by you some pre-reading around the subject and then we hold a series of workshops where we discuss our options, our values and what we want to be included in the policy. I adopt a fun and relaxed approach where everyone is welcome to participate. When managed in this way, new policy or updates are more likely to be embedded quicker and the goodwill and buy-in is there from the start.

On delivering a one day Core Investigations Skills Workshop "Aideen Whelehan delivered training to our Grievance Assessors on ‘Core Investigation Skills’ which included an element of investigating allegations of discrimination.

My first interaction with Aideen was via the telephone to discuss our training needs and I was particularly pleased to hear Aideen was flexible in her approach to ensuring the session was delivered at the appropriate level due to the experience of those present. During our call, Aideen provided me with some background as to her experience and employment history and it quickly became apparent that we were in safe hands.

Additionally, Aideen noted that I requested for investigating allegations of discrimination to be included into the session. This helped to make me feel as though Aideen was listening to our training needs and I was left feeling confident that the session would be beneficial for all those present.

During the session, Aideen helped to make the attendees feel at ease and this was evident from the free flowing conversations and discussions we held. Aideen did not force any issue upon the attendees and allowed these conversations to take place whilst helping to maintain a structure to the session.

The follow up session was a useful checkpoint for the attendees to reflect on what they had learnt and how the skills gained have been put into practise.
